Phone Next Year
Tuesday, November 07, 2006 By Kim Tae-hun
SK Telecom plans to introduce the industry?s first mobile phone adopting
Linux operating system (OS) in next year.
The wireless operator is developing a new handset linking its mobile platform
¡®T-PAK¡¯ with Motorola Linux OS. Windows CE has been
limited installed into smart phones, but this is the first time that Linux
is adopted for a mobile phone.
SK Telecom aims to become better positioned for competition in the mobile
phone universal OS market expected to take off in next year.
By joining hands with Motorola, which invests in Linux to rival with Nokia's
Symbian, it aims to reduce costs of installation, and make fast moves toward
next-generation wireless Internet service.
The two companies plan to optimize the operating system for SK Telecom's
¡®T-PAK¡¯ and introduce new offerings, by addressing
the lack of link applications with Linux. ¡° We
aim to combine Motorola?s Linux and our wireless service capabilities,¡±
said a manager at SK Telecom. ¡°We plan to make various attempts
since we are still unfamiliar with installation of universal OS.¡±
The company plans to introduce a Linux-link mobile phone by the end f this
year.
Industry experts forecast that installation of universal OS will pick up
steam in next year in line with adoption of mobile phone chipsets such as
Qualcomm MSM7000 and ARM9/AMR11 dual core.
